Laboratory assays to help diagnose Lyme disease detect antibodies that the body produces in response to exposure to Borrelia burgdorferi (the bacteria that causes Lyme disease). However, these antibodies can take a few weeks to reach detectable levels. If a recent exposure is suspected, another blood sample may need to be collected and tested in 2–6 weeks.
In addition, successful treatment for Lyme disease does not prevent a future infection.
